Merman and Pandora, 2017

A ‘Pandora’s box’ is a metaphor that refers to a source of endless complications or trouble arising from a single, simple miscalculation.
The story begins by introducing Merman whose mother had been captured and killed by a human being. He spends all his life trying to find peace away from people. One day he meets Pandora and chooses to trust this innocent girl who in turn opens her box and lets all the evils out.
In this film, I have used Mandarin because a foreign language often drives audiences’ curiosity and attention, providing a space to imagine the story and consider the issues. I played around with video effects while editing and decided to give it a flat look, which fits the music and overall theme.
Video Screening on May 4th, 2017 at Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona.
