“Brane /brān/, noun, physics, an extended object with any given number of dimensions, of which strings in string theory are examples with one dimension.” Definitions from Oxford Languages.
Brane explores multidimensional universe and provides mediated sound in space (collected from variety of spacecraft over the past 50 years from Space Sound partnered with NASA) by an interactive installation. The project aims to foster the discourse on how technology and science can help people understand the unseen and change viewers’ stereotype of their known knowledge.
Participants will be guided to pick up different sized plastic balls (3in to 6in) with various density and weight, then to move and place them on a designed surface (12in*30in) with overhead projection, showing animated shadow of extra dimensions. Sound and programed visual will be triggered in real time based on their decision of interaction. Artwork using camera sensing and projection mapping to locate and response continuously, meanwhile, creating visualization of the hidden dimensions, which is unimaginable, in the way of common communication modalities. The contrast of the balls apparent size and their actual sensational weight are thoughtfully designed to create an Ah-Ha moment of realization. It offers a playful and meditated environment and experience for the participants the observe, listen and learn the mysterious space.
In the research level of theoretical physics, “string theory came after the quantum field theory, which is a theoretical framework that combines classical field theory, special relativity and quantum mechanics.” Schroeder, D. (1995). An Introduction to Quantum Field. Leading by John H. Schwarz, it is being developed into superstring theory. Following the revolution, physicists started to discover “the theory must be an 11-dimensional one.” Witten, Edward (1995). String theory dynamics in various dimensions. And others state that there could be more dimensions than 11. Joseph Polchinski discovered that the theory requires the inclusion of higher-dimensional objects, called D-branes, which opened possibilities for solving some cosmology problems. Polchinski, J (1995). Dirichlet branes and Ramond - Ramond charges. This is where the project name Brane came from.
Besides science, the earliest culture evidence of multidimension was written in the ancient Buddhist sutra Leng Yan Jing saying all six paths of beings are existing in one shared space with 12 layers, in this case I think calling it 12-brane is more suitable, where they are not able to see each other.
